The beat group The Shake Spears arrived in Belgium in December 1964 from Northern Rhodesia now Zambia. They had previously been successful in their own country, playing as the Dynamics. Despite numerous lineup changes between 1965 and 1967, the group was very well received in Belgium, recording numerous hit singles mostly covers and releasing an album, The Shake Spears. They also toured Australia, England, Holland, Germany, and France. The Shake Spears originated in Northern Rhodesia which became Zambia in 1964. Original line up: Chris Kritzinger, Johnny Kreuger, Perry Jordaan and Calvin Coleman. Later members were Alan Escombe-Wolhuter, Gene Latter, Ron Patton, Brian, Chris Stone, and others. After the Shake Spears disbanded, Escombe and Stone formed the prog rock group Fynn McCool. He changed their name into the Shake Spears, which is a play on words with William Shakespeare to hint at sophistication and their African origin mixing savage supposedly African spears with the Shake, a popular dance to be found in many songs at the time do the Shake , and was intended to sound exotic to attract the Belgian publics interest.
