The Dave Brubeck Quartet is a jazz album released by The Dave Brubeck Quartet in several iterations between 1952 and 1962. The album was first released in 1952, on the Fantasy Records label, as Fantasy 10 LP 3-7. The tracks were recorded in September 1952 at the Surf Club in Hollywood, California. In place of Quartet regulars Bob Bates and Joe Dodge, are Wyatt Bull Ruther on bass and, depending on the track, either Herb Barman or Lloyd Davis on drums. The liner notes were written by Barry Ulanov. Dave Brubeck is generally considered one of the jazz giants of the 1950s and '60s, but his prolific output and performances from the '70s through the 2000s are seldom discussed. This is a shame, since Brubeck was playing with the same remarkable level of invention and skill at the turn of the century as he did on 1959's classic TIME OUT. The many sides Dave Brubeck recorded for Concord and Telarc affirm that the peripatetic pianist successfully reinvented himself after the departure of Paul Desmond, at least as far as a solid core of admiring fans was concerned but, based on The Best of the Dave Brubeck Quartet 1979-2004, a 20 track sampling assembled by Brubeck's long time producermanager. Russell Gloyd, there's no question that the years with Desmond were his best.
